Duszność jest jednym z najczęstszych objawów klinicznych, zgłaszanych zarówno w warunkach podstawowej opieki zdrowotnej, jak i w szpitalnych oddziałach ratunkowych. W sytuacji, gdy pacjent zgłasza duszność, ale badanie osłuchowe płuc nie wykazuje istotnych odchyleń, konieczne jest przeprowadzenie szerokiej diagnostyki różnicowej obejmującej schorzenia układu krążenia, układu oddechowego, a także możliwe przyczyny metaboliczne i psychogenne.
